Anzai defines the word ‘design’ as an unity between the form and the end of an object. Through his works of art, he has attempted reinterpretation of the design of everyday objects.

Although the subjects of this series of paintings are common objects found in everyday life, at first glance, it is not obvious what these objects are for. By taking the objects out of the anthropocentric contexts, such as their usage, and removing color and proportions, the paintings encourage the beholder to look at the objects as a pure form. As in its title ‘TBD’, an acronym for ‘to be determined’, the relationship between the representation and the interpretation of everyday objects is ambiguous.

TBDとは“To Be Determined”の略で、今後決定される事項に使用される言葉です。 安西は、デザインをカタチと目的の密接な結びつきと定義しており、今までも数々の作品において日用品を再解釈しようとしてきました。 このペインティングのシリーズで描かれているモノたちは何の変哲もない日用品なのですが、一見しただけでは、それらの使い途はよくわからないでしょう。 この作品では、サイズ感などの3次元的な情報を欠落させることで、その文化背景や使用方法から切り離し、純粋に形としてみることを促そうてしています。
